Get set to celebrate: Breaking down our four-layer tablescapeⓒ for Valentine's Day

Take inspiration from our past Valentine's Day photo shoot featuring tabletop decor and colorful glassware. We are really proud of this table, and constantly refer back to these images for decorating ideas. This is the shoot where we first decided cranberries are perfect for Valentine's treats (try these recipes!) and where we started to formulate our four-layer tablescape method.

All you need is a focal piece, special lighting, scattered smalls, and floral elements. Browse below to create your own unique four-layer tablescapeⓒ to set the scene.

Get your linens set, and we'll lay down the rest of the details

For this shoot, we used heavy cotton painters' dropcloths to contrast the shiny metallics, brilliant red cranberries, and delicate glass.

Our artisan-made table linens are great for a special meal. Or go maximalist with a colorful printed tablecloth and mismatched napkins in the same color family.

Our hammered glassware is a must for the season of love - get your favorite styles in Blush pink.

  1. Choose a focal element for your centerpiece

A floral arrangement can serve as the big statement element, but here we also filled a vintage pedestal dish with a pile of fresh cranberries. The variety of bright reds makes your mouth water!

An alternative idea that works well on a buffet for a birthday celebration - here we stacked a set of graduated lacquer boxes for our photo shoot. What a stunning way to present a group of small presents wrapped in gorgeous little boxes.

  1. Add some enchanting lighting

You can see that just a couple of beeswax tapers pick up the bright flowers and create a sparkle on the glassware.

Whether you go for real flame, or battery-powered and flameless, add a timeless, lovely layer to your tablescape with just a few candles in holders that pick up a color or metallic element from the theme.

Just make sure they're unscented so they don't compete with your menu!

You could also drape tiny string lights over and around the other elements of your tablescape for a little sparkle.

  1. Scatter in some smalls

What do we mean by 'smalls'? Pretty much any small, detailed object that you can use in multiples to provide texture and detailed visual interest up close. Think tiny figurines, pine cones, flower petals, or even confetti.

For this setting, we scattered more fresh cranberries like natural confetti along the length of the table.

A set of multiple minis can be arranged so many ways - group them, line them up, or gather them together in a bowl or basket.

  1. Finish with botanicals

You may have noticed some overlap here, and that's to show you can use our 4 Layers methodⓒ with some poetic license!

Our tablescape here has a floral arrangement (fresh and faux!) as its large focal element, and also uses fresh cranberries scattered around for our smalls element.

We always want to balance out our man-made elements (hardgoods like ceramic and glass) and textiles with some tokens of nature. Fill in with flowers, greens, and other botanical elements according to the season, menu, and theme.

Try our four-layer techniqueⓒ for an unforgettable tablescape

A fresh and flirty Valentine's Day tablescape awaits you and your guests. And the best part is, this process can be scaled to fit any table size, whether you are gathering tete-a-tete, or feeding more than a few. And you can repurpose decor from your everyday collection, or previous year's holidays, to make it truly personal.
